Define-se duração ao tempo que um som ou um silêncio subsiste. Embora esta duração possa ser medida em segundos, em termos musicais a duração é estabelecida através de notação musical, incluindo notas e pausas de diferentes formatos (símbolos), cujos valores se encontram relacionados entre si. Estes símbolos musicais serão apresentados em capítulos posteriores.
